Tim: Why are you doing your article on this topic?

Simon: Because I’ve been playing hockey there since I was five years old.

Tim: What are some of the challenges of closing the arena?

Simon: One of the advantages of closing it is that you are lowering the budget but you are getting rid of many clubs, activities, and camps.

Tim: Why shouldn’t the arena be closed?

Simon: The arena shouldn’t be closed because it houses clubs, it’s an iconic place in the community and it runs many different types of activities.

Ben: What is your topic?

Matthew: The Bluenose.

Ben: Why did you pick this topic?

Matthew: Because it’s something in our community and it seemed interesting to me.

Ben: What do you think about the Bluenose setting sail?

Bella: I think it’s going to sail at first but I’m not sure because it didn’t sail that well the first time that they launched it.

A new paper in New Ross!

In The News is back in the great community of New Ross for another edition of the New Ross Chronicle-Scribe with Peter Millett’s Grade 5/6 class.

Here are some practice interviews from the first day!

Tim interviews Emmalee. Photo by James.

Tim: Can you tell me what your story is about?

Emmalee: Our newspaper article is about our school greenhouse collapsing because of all the snow we had this winter.

Tim: Why did you choose a topic like this?

Emmalee: We chose it because it’s really important, the effects it has on our school. And because we used to help the teachers take care of the greenhouse and we had a list and we’d sign up to help. So, it’s kind of a big deal because all the food that we grow in our greenhouse goes into the cafeteria for our Sub Days and salads and stuff so it’s kind of a downfall.

Landen: What is your topic about?

Jenna: Our topic is about Jamie Junger’s music program.

Landen: Why did you choose this topic?

Jenna: I think it’s a really good way to get kids out and playing music. It’s good to listen to it, but I like to play it more than listening.

Landen: How do you think this could effect other students?

Jenna: In music you really just get to express yourself. You can rock out on the guitar or you can play the keyboard. You can hit the drums as loud as you want. It’s just a way of expressing yourself, really.

Beth: What’s your topic about?

Kayla: The new dress code that’s coming to our school.

Beth: Are you excited about this dress code or do you wish it was non-existant?

Kayla: I think it’s a good idea for it to come to our school because it gives people a better understanding so when they get older they know how to express themselves, to not show too much of their bodies.

Getting it Dunn!

Tim: So Peter, what story are you thinking about writing for your newspaper?

Peter: Should iPads be in school or not.

Tim: And what will that story be about?

Peter: If iPads should be in school because we all talk about technology and how we should  read more books. So, if we have [iPads] in school, it’s degrading the whole premise behind it.

Tim: What do you think the best thing about an iPad might be?

Peter: That it’s portable.

Nick: So, what are you doing your topic on?

Jordan: Should you wash fruits before eating them.

Nick: Why are you doing that topic?

Jordan: To see if you really need to or not.

Nick: So, should you be eating fruit without washing it first?

Jordan: Probably not because they put pesticide on them to grow them.

Klay: So Lydia, what are you doing your topic on?

Lydia: Is the story worth the paper it’s on?

Klay: Why would you pick this topic?

Lydia: Because people are talking about how we shouldn’t be cutting trees down for paper.

Klay: Do you think we’re wasting paper when we make a story on them?

Lydia: Yes I do because if you’re making up a weird story about a vampire coming after you, it’s not really worth cutting down a tree when a tree is important to help us breathe.

Adina: What are the perks of working at the newspaper business?

Tim: It’s really fun to have a job where you can get out of the office and spend time with people and meet new people.

Adina: Who are some of the interesting people you’ve interviewed?

Tim: That’s a good question … I’ve interviewed Randy Bachman, Gordon Pinsent, Denzel Washington – lots of interesting people.

Adina: What are the challenges of working at the newspaper business?

Tim: We have deadlines, as this class is going to find out. All of the sudden the clock starts ticking and you have to get your work done at a certain time or the whole paper gets held up. It’s a little scary but it also makes you work really hard and do really good work.

Pentz prepares to publish!

Students in Mrs. Lohnes’ Grade 5/6 class at Pentz Elementary School did some practice interviews to prepare for publishing their own newspaper. Check it out:

Tim: What story are you thinking about writing?

Ben: I’m thinking about writing a story about Amazon drones, how they might affect shipping and mail.

Tim: What sort of changes do you see happening for society if we start to see drones used for shipping?

Ben: I think there will be a few problems because I’m more worried about the blades. I mean, what if there’s a child playing in the yard and the drone’s coming down? That might be a little bit risky. The upside will be it can be faster mailing.

Tim: Why do you like drones?

Ben: When they’re used for a purpose like mailing and not spying because I think it’s ridiculous to be spying on each other.

Daniel: What are you writing about?

Breton: Bluetooths.

Daniel: What are you writing about Bluetooths?

Breton: Are they safe.

Daniel: What’s your opinion on Bluetooths and why?

Breton: I don’t think they’re safe because you still have to press buttons.

Tim: What story are you thinking about writing for your school newspaper?

Wyatt: I’m thinking of writing about the volunteer coaches in New Ross.

Tim: What’s this volunteer coach program about?

Wyatt: It’s about the coaches that we’ve had for basketball and sports teams [who] have volunteered their time to train us and bring us to games.

Tim: What are the benefits of this coaching program?

Wyatt: The good thing about this program is that kids get to play sports and it’s nice that people are volunteering their time to help these kids so they can play sports.

Tim: What are some of the challenges for this program?

Wyatt: Some of the challenges [are] that some of the games might be in work time for the coaches, so they might not be able to make it.

Alex: What is your topic going to be?

Emmalee: My story is going to be about a ‘Kindness Day’ that me and another student are starting.

Alex: Why are you picking that topic for your newspaper article?

Emmalee: I think that it’s a great way to spread this day around other schools and the school board to have other kids participate in Kindness Day.

Alex: When do you think this will take place?

Emmalee: The first Kindness Day will be on May 28.

Alex: What do you think will happen with this Kindness Day going on?

Emmalee: I think that there will be lots of activities that are planned and lots of different things that students can do to help spread kindness and to be kind to other people.

Alex: What do you think might be some challenges?

Emmalee: Some students might just take it as a theme day like Winter Carnival, just to be kind on that certain day and not all the students will participate.
